PIANTE MARCONI:
Togheter we grow.
Piante Marconi: Almost Two Centuries of Experience, with an Ever-Greener Vision
The story of Piante Marconi began in the second half of the nineteenth century, when Antonio Marconi established his farming business in Grottammare, a beautiful coastal town in the Piceno area of Italy’s Marche region. In a territory blessed with a particularly favourable microclimate, the founder began by growing orange trees, before gradually turning his attention to pittosporums, oleanders, palms and the main Mediterranean plant species.
He was driven both by a passion for the extraordinary vitality of these plants and by his ability to anticipate the growing interest of contemporary society in ornamental greenery. This vision laid the foundations for an entrepreneurial journey that would continue to evolve over time. Originally a family-run farming operation, Piante Marconi developed throughout the twentieth century, passing through a period of sharecropping before becoming a structured, specialised and technologically advanced plant nursery.
Our history, however, has not been without its challenges. The devastating frost of 1985 marked one of the most difficult periods for the company, severely affecting both our crops and the work carried out over many years. Yet this traumatic event also provided fresh impetus for change. The company introduced more advanced systems for plant protection and storage, intensified its research activities and began monitoring trends in the ornamental horticulture and nursery sector even more closely. In an increasingly competitive market, we transformed a crisis into an opportunity for renewal and growth.
Today, Piante Marconi operates throughout Italy and in numerous European countries, while gradually expanding its presence into new international markets. Our team comprises more than twenty-five people, bringing together a wide range of skills and expertise in pursuit of a shared objective: to grow and export container-grown plants, spreading the beauty and identity of the Mediterranean landscape.
Over the years, we have built a team of professionals capable of managing every stage of the nursery production process: from cultivation and quality control to packaging, logistics and after-sales support. Specialists in plant care, transportation and planting work together every day to ensure that each specimen reaches its destination in optimum condition and continues to thrive in its new environment.
Despite the evolution of our company structure and the expansion of our markets, we have never forgotten our true identity: we are a family working together, united by the same values and the same love of plants and nature. The green heart of Piante Marconi continues to beat at our historic headquarters in Grottammare, an ideal location for growing Mediterranean species and the place where a journey spanning almost two centuries first began.
Working with nature every day also means taking responsibility for protecting it. For this reason, our commitment extends beyond the ornamental quality of our plants to the development of increasingly efficient and sustainable cultivation methods.
All our crops are irrigated using drip-irrigation systems, designed to deliver water precisely where it is needed and minimise waste. The water is subsequently collected and recovered through a network of drainage channels, encouraging a more responsible use of natural resources. By working with specialised telemetry-monitoring agencies, we can also assess plant health and determine more accurately the exact resources required during each flowering cycle.
A significant proportion of our crops is grown in hillside areas, where environmental conditions allow species such as organically grown Laurus nobilis to develop vigorously, reducing the need for invasive treatments. This approach is further reflected in our PGI bay laurel project, a programme based on product traceability and identification, as well as guaranteed quality and control throughout the entire supply chain.
Almost two centuries have passed since Antonio Marconi planted his first orange trees in Grottammare. Since then, technologies, markets and cultivation methods have changed, but the passion that guides our work has remained unchanged.
This passion is also sustained by the trust of our customers and partners, who have provided us with the vital energy needed not only to build a successful business, but also to continue innovating, improving and developing a shared project together.
Because the future we envision—and wish to cultivate with you—has only one colour: green.
