EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

Paolo De Castro
Committee Of The European Parliament

Speech by Paolo De Castro

Another year has gone by, despite the persistence of wars around the world that destabilize markets and make the work of businesses increasingly arduous. Specifically, agribusinesses, which, faced with a difficult general economic situation -with rising costs of raw materials and production inputs-continue to ensure that quality food and products arrive in our homes through structured supply chains, such as that of floriculture.

In Europe, and in the European Union specifically, which I have the honour of representing in Parliament, the work we have done confirms our ambitious design to set limits on undifferentiated commodity flows. That is why we are very proud to have successfully completed the reform of Geographical Indications (GIs), effective just this year, for which I was rapporteur in the EU Parliament. We are talking about a system without equal in the world, capable of generating value without requiring any public investment; a system based on strengthening the role of protection consortia, greater protection for PDOs and PGIs, and more transparency for consumers, with the obligation for producers to indicate their first and last names on packaging.

In this context, companies producing cut flowers, plants, and nursery products, especially those associated with Anve, are confirmed as a cornerstone in our business world; a bulwark of our economy to which we renew our utmost esteem and attention also for 2024, which will not fail to open new horizons and new opportunities for growth.
