The Society of Landscape Horticulture of Serbia

For the year 2024, we are twinned with Serbia

The Society of Landscape Horticulture of Serbia (SLHS) is an association of professionals in the field of horticulture, landscape architecture and arboriculture in Serbia with over 70 members. The Society has a long tradition of 21 ye-ars. The main idea of the association is to represent landscape horticulture professionals, growers and arboriculture organizations and to protect their common interests, as well as to promote the status of landscape architecture as a profession in Serbia. SLHS provides collegial support to its members, and shares knowledge and experience through the development of organized life-long learning and training for members and the wider professional public, as well as through the exchange of experience with representatives of other related professions.

SLHS takes care of landscape horticulture activities in cooperation with competent institutions such as the Faculty of Forestry of the University of Belgrade, Ministry of Scien-ce, Technological Development and Innovation, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Water Management, and the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Republic of Serbia. Since the time of the founding Society organized, jointly with the Faculty of Forestry, specialized Symposiaand Seminars ‘Landscape Horticulture’. It has always been an opportunity to share knowledge and experiences of professionals in the field of plant production, plant protection, ecology and arboriculture. As an active member of ENA (European Nurserystock Assotiation) and European Arboricultural Council (EAC) we collaborate with international organizations and local associations within related professions to contribute to the advancement of European technical and quality standards for nursery stock, preparation of legislation as well as its alignment with EU regulations.

One of the long-term objectives of SLHS is to cluster and unite smaller nurseries to jointly enter the wider market, give advice on the changing needs of different markets and help promote members’ products. SLHS also develops activities focused on defending the social and financial interests of members, provide information in order to support adapting of their production and plant assortment to climate change, environmental and emerging plant health issues. As far as the spatial distribution of nurseries is concerned, there are 4 main regions for nursery production: Northern Serbia (Vojvodina province: Subotica, Banat) 43.5%, Western Serbia (Mačva: Lipolist, Šabac) 6.5%, Belgrade, Šumadija, 19%, and the Central part of Serbia (Pomoravlje: Veliki Šiljegovac, Kruševac): 26%. There are 231 registered nurseries producing trees, shrubs and perennials. The average area of privately owned nurseries is 7 ha (at least 0.5 to 20 ha). The size of plant nurseries in Serbia ranges from small backyards to larger family businesses and large state-owned companies. Nurseries mainly produce plants in the open field (field-grown) or in containers.
